From Determination to the Semifinals: The Journey of Matt Burden
Some people walk into a gym thinking they’re in shape.
Others walk in ready to find out what they’re really made of.
Eight years ago, Matt Burden found Strongside Fitness through a simple Groupon. At the time, he was active; playing racquetball, running, and training for obstacle course races. By most standards, he considered himself fit.
Strongside quickly redefined that.
A Humbling Start
Matt’s first experience with barbell training was eye-opening. Movements that are foundational at Strongside felt completely foreign.
Holding an empty barbell during warmups? A challenge.
Executing lifts with proper technique? Even harder.
“I thought I was fit,” Matt recalls. “But I found out right away that being able to do burpees, run, and some pull-ups was far from what being fit means at Strongside.”
But where experience lacked, determination took over.
Built, Not Given
Matt didn’t walk in with elite strength or polished skills. What he brought was something more powerful: consistency and grit.
His first CrossFit Open came just five weeks after joining. The effort was there—but the ability wasn’t. Still, he showed up. Every day.
- Determined to get stronger
- Determined to learn
- Determined to improve
And over time, that consistency paid off.
His Open performances improved year after year. Then came multiple Quarterfinal qualifications. And eventually…
🔥🔥 Two Semifinal appearances. 🔥
Now, Matt has earned an invitation to compete live for a shot at the 2026 CrossFit Games.
“The payoff was making the Semifinals,” he says, “but the journey to get there is what I’m most proud of.”
More Than Just Strength
While Matt’s physical transformation is undeniable; gaining strength, endurance, and skill; it’s the mental shift that stands out most.
“Going to Strongside is a choice, and it’s typically the hardest thing I do on any given day,” he explains. “So everything else in life that once felt hard… doesn’t seem so hard anymore.”
That mindset has carried far beyond the gym.
In 2025, Matt completed a Half Ironman with just 12 days’ notice. Not because it was easy but because he had built the confidence to take on hard challenges.
A Resume of Relentless Effort
Matt’s journey is packed with milestones that reflect both endurance and discipline:
- 24-hour row events
- 24-hour partner workouts
- 10-year burpee streak
- 3 Spartan Ultras & 7 Spartan Trifectas
- Half Ironman, half marathon, and full marathon
Each one a testament to the habits he built day in and day out.
The Power of Community
Ask Matt what made the biggest difference, and the answer is simple: the people.
“Without the community, there would be no journey.”
From day one, he was surrounded by members who supported him, celebrated small wins, and pushed him to be better. As he improved, those same people became both competition and lifelong friends.
“People I can’t wait to see and work out with each day… and spend time with outside the gym.”
The Takeaway
Matt’s story isn’t about where he started—it’s about what happens when you keep showing up.
He walked in with cardio and determination.
He built strength, skill, and confidence.
And he continues to raise the bar.
“Strongside provided me with a positive change to so many aspects of my life,” he says.
And his message to anyone considering taking that first step?
“If you truly want to make positive changes and improve your overall health and fitness—Strongside is the place where you will achieve those goals.”
Your journey starts with one decision.
Show up. Stay consistent. See what you're capable of.
